About Mark

Mark Ereira 3

I have been a member of the Green Party for six years. Before that I was a member of the Labour Party for 27 years. I stood for parliament three times in Conservative-dominated Suffolk, nearly winning in 1997. In the last General election I stood as the Green Party candidate and secured one of the highest Green votes – at 4.3%.

I was first elected as a Councillor in 1995 rising to Deputy Leader at St Edmundsbury Borough Council. From 2009 onwards I have been Green County Councillor for the Tower Division (Bury St Edmunds), and was re-elected last year. I now lead the small, high quality Green & Independent Group on Suffolk County Council. I am an active member of the LGA’s Community Wellbeing Board, representing the Independent Group on the LGA.

I have a successful and long established track record of working with voluntary and community sector leaders.  I am passionate about civil society becoming, once again, the lifeblood of bold and powerful local communities and individuals confident and energised about what unique contributions they can bring to making our world a much better place. In the context of my work I have considerable local government experience in such diverse localities as Southwark, Tower Hamlets, Lewisham, Redbridge, Harrow, Norwich, Ipswich, Islington and of course Suffolk where I am County Councillor.  As a freelance consultant, I have raised over £8 million in the past 8 years for a range of charities and social enterprises; and helped them develop their marketing, evaluation and management expertise.
